In an ongoing series of articles about the units of Making History II, this discussion covers infantry.   One of the most exciting changes for Making History II is the variety of ground forces available to players.  Infantry units, the backbone of any ground force, have expanded their tactical usage with new unit types.  Making History II gives players the option to customize their infantry to support nearly any military plan or counter any enemy strategy.  Each nation will have access to seven types of infantry unit: Militia, Regular, Mounted, Airborne, Engineers, Marines, and Mountain troops.

Militia units are often everyday citizens who are pressed into service in times of need.  Cheap and fast to build, they are used as a last line of defense against invading forces, or as garrisons.

Regular troops are the standard, trained infantry force. They are the least costly of all non-militia units and offer average combat and movement ability.

Mounted troops, still used in this era as mobile infantry forces, are faster than other regular infantry types.

Airborne troops are paratroopers able to drop directly into enemy territory.  They provide unique tactical opportunities and are effective in the short-term, but may lose their combat effectiveness if isolated from allied supply.

Engineers use their knowledge and tools to alter the battlefield with offensive, defensive and logistical advantages that will improve movement speed and combat power for troops crossing rivers and in mountains.

Marines are specialists in amphibious warfare and provide increased combat power during naval combat landings.

Mountain troops are trained and outfitted for rough terrain and gain bonuses to their combat and movement in mountainous regions.

Non-militia infantry in Making History II can be upgraded to increase their effectiveness. City research projects will unlock up to 6 different upgrades representing advancements to the unit’s weapons and equipment for each unit type. These improvements can be applied to units previously completed.

Deployed from cities, infantry units enter the game as green, untested troops. As they engage enemy units or capture enemy territory, they gain experience to grow in strength and effectiveness. Unit morale, influenced by combat outcome and national stability, can also impact effectiveness. If damaged, a unit loses combat power but can be reinforced. These distinct infantry types will incur varying deployment costs to reflect their advanced training and their offensive and movement capabilities. Additional research advancements will allow for more combat force options such as Motorized and Mechanized infantry.

Specialized infantry will offer Making History II players a broader array of tactical options and threats. Understanding local terrain and enemy locations will influence long-term research goals and strategic planning.
